WHY WAS that night any different from the many nights for about twenty-five years? Coming home drunk was nothing new to me. I was quite an expert at that. Being unable to remember coming home was not a new experience, either. That was a regular pattern for me. But something was different that Tuesday morning, even with the usual hangover. My head ached just as much; my stomach was just as upset; my hands shook as much, so it was impossible to tie my daughter's shoes. But most mornings were like that.
