My home group and too many other groups seem to be carrying a premature message to the neophyte that amounts to "My Higher Power can lick your Higher Power." The "First Things First" AA message is, and always has been, "Don't drink." It simply isn't fair to "preach" the spiritual aspect of our program to a new person attending that all-important first meeting. Whether subtly by innuendo or crudely by self-righteous declaration, too many AAs are turning off some who might find sobriety and are sending them back out to their drunken deaths. I can think of five such fatalities in the last two years.
