I Thought I Was Different

ON ENTERING AA, I brought along a defensive, hostile drunk--myself. Suspicious of the people I found here, I was incapable of believing the things they were telling me. They were spinning fantastic tales of how much booze they'd consumed, how long they'd been sober, and how they stayed sober by carrying some mysterious message. And all that spiritual talk! I'd say to myself that these people couldn't have had the troubles I'd had, or drunk as much as I had. (Was I ever wrong!) You see, I thought I was different.
