AROUND THE TABLES, an often-heard sentiment goes something like this: "Thank God for my sponsor," or "My sponsor saved me," or "Without a sponsor, I don't know what I would have done." There is no question about the absolute advantage a newcomer gains in acquiring a good sponsor. Many in AA owe their longtime sobriety to the patience, kindness, and toughness of veterans, particularly for help in the early days of struggle.
