Here is your etymological help from a reference librarian, in response to your request in the November Grapevine ("To etymologists: Help!"). So far as I know--and I have searched in every standard work on the market--there is only one work that has an entry for "mokus." It is the Dictionary of American Slang. Page 341 proves that the Grapevine staff has been on the ball with the proper spelling:
