G. D.'s letter set me to thinking. We AAs are all united by our alcoholism, but there is still a lot of room for diversity in our Fellowship. Some of that diversity is expressed in special groups--men, women, young people, etc. This has gone on since AA's early days, presumably with the blessing of the founders (for example, see the story of Jim S. on page 483 of the third edition of the Big Book).
