A STORY FROM J. S. of California tells of a World War I colonel who was riding in a French train toward the battlefront. Exhausted, he drank a liter of wine, slept for a few fitful hours, and staggered off the train in a small village. At that moment, a small flock of pigeons landed near his feet.
