A Now-forty Face

I HAD BEEN in AA only seven months, with eighty-five days' continuous sobriety, when I approached my fortieth birthday. For me, as a woman and an alcoholic, the big forty loomed as an impending disaster, offering several reasons for a good binge that would cause me to lose that ninety days again.
