Gratitude for Today

YESTERDAY, I got up earlier than usual, because I had to have some lab work done. I was also a little edgier than usual, because I needed some guidance with an approach to a new AA member. So I reread the Big Book chapter "Working With Others," which led to thoughts of the Twelfth Step, which led me to sort through my supply of AA pamphlets, choosing several to place in the waiting room of my doctor's office (including "AA and the Medical Profession," for him). This physician has been treating me for minor and major ailments since my early months of sobriety, becoming increasingly interested in our Fellowship. More and more, I realize the responsibility of practicing these principles in all my affairs, because I may be the only example of Alcoholics Anonymous someone sees. As I sat with a cup of tea and a cigarette, enjoying the sunshine, I thought, "This is a day the Lord has made." I watered the plants. I read the Prayer of St. Francis that hangs above the bathroom sink. I asked God, as I understand Him, what I could do for Him today. I asked for the strength to carry out His will for me and for awareness of His guidance in all my everyday situations.
