If It Feels Good . . .

Maybe it's the "enemy of the best

THE CONCEPT of "being good to yourself" is likely to get so tangled up with rationalizations that it turns out to be in reality "self-indulgence." I can see and even express clearly the connection between my abuse of alcohol and my application of the currently popular slogan "If it feels good, do it." For years, a high degree of intoxication and the liberation of impulses that accompanied it felt so good to me that I was willing to pay the price in hangovers and social embarrassments. In pursuing happiness with the assistance of alcohol, I developed a surprising, and previously uncharacteristic, attitude--utter disregard for the welfare and convenience of other people.
