They come in all shapes and sizes--newcomers and old-timers, those who make the program come alive, and those who don't make it at all. Everywhere in AA, we discover

AN ALCOHOLIC who continues to drink will eventually go insane or die prematurely. That statement impressed me when I was new in AA, and I have since repeated it to newcomers many times--so many, in fact, that I may begin to feel I am dealing with something in the abstract, just another cliche. Then I get a phone call, pick up a newspaper, or visit an institution, and the stark truth of those words rears its ugly head once again.
