While I was still in the denial stage of my alcoholism, I took great pride in the fact that I was always on time--until the evening I arrived at my weekly dog-obedience class fifteen minutes early and sat smugly watching the others rushing in just seconds before the class was to start. It wasn't until we were all lining up to begin the lesson that I realized I had forgotten my dog.
