At my first AA meeting, I wondered if I'd be able to afford to join. I did not have any money. Very timidly, I asked the man who brought me how much the dues were--I wanted to join if I could afford it. He replied, "You can't afford not to stay with us." Then he added, "You cannot join AA." He paused, and my heart sank. He continued, "You don't pay any dues. You are a member if you say you are."
