What We Really Give up

EVERY SO OFTEN, I hear a statement about "giving up" drinking, usually with extremely sacrificial implications. I always wonder on such occasions whether these speakers recognize what they have really "given up" when they rid themselves of their slavery to a "cunning, baffling, powerful," and personality-altering demon.
