Is Freedom of Thought a Threat to AA?

AT THE TABLES in AA meetings, I often witness reactions of fear to such words as intellect, philosophy, and self-reliance. It is as if the structure of those members' beliefs was being shaken. And so it should be. Often, they quote out of context from the Big Book, using it as a stamp of authority on their personal interpretations of truth.
