Speaking 'our language'

"Well, you'd drink and drug like I do if you had been rejected since birth as I've been." That was the hook on which I hung my alcohol and drug abuse for many years. (Also, I had long known that I was gay, a social outcast.) My natural mother gave me up for adoption when I was three months old. I was adopted by two people who had their own problems, and whose marriage mercifully ended in divorce when I was fifteen. All of that fed my self-pity and gave me justification for my drinking until I found AA.
