By Willpower Alone?
AS IS THE case with most alcoholics, I felt myself unique, especially in one particular area of my story: how I stopped drinking. I believed I had done it on my own by sheer willpower. For over eight years, I did not drink and was told by many people what a strong and admirable person I was. Of course, I believed this to be true. I had never attended an AA meeting, although I had read some pamphlets and answered some quizzes in magazines and AA literature found in various places. I believed I was an alcoholic but did nothing about it for a long time, until my last drunk. That was not my worst; it was a soft bottom at which I was able to stop drinking.
