Assignment for a historian

In the July 1984 Grapevine, you mentioned that St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio, was "the first religious hospital to receive prospective members of AA for treatment on a regular basis." I find this statement to be of interest, because we at St. Francis have had an alcohol detox unit since the late 1880s. In fact, an AA member mentioned to me in the early 1970s that as late as 1944, St. Francis was the only general hospital in the country admitting alcoholics with the primary diagnosis of alcoholism.
