Women and children last?

I knew years ago I was a minority in AA. I had young children and was struggling to find sobriety. About all I remember of that time is, I felt just a little different from the rest, because I had to bring my kids to the meeting. I desperately wanted to fit in but never quite did, holding a baby in my arms. And I also remember a fellow saying, "You bring your kids, your dog, and your parakeet, if that's what you need to do to stay sober!"
