ON THE SAME TOPIC of liquids, J. S. of Illinois sent in a tale about two tipplers in a bar who were arguing about what was the greatest scientific achievement of all time. One of them steadfastly maintained that it was the thermos bottle. His friend replied in disgust, "In this age of computers, space shuttles, open heart surgery, and organ transplants, how could you choose something that does nothing but keep hot things hot and cold things cold?"
