WHEN I ARRIVED at AA, I was firmly convinced that I was really a successful man who had had a run of bad luck and been let down by those around me. (Wouldn't you drink in the same circumstances?) All I needed from AA was a little understanding, some simple rules on controlled drinking, and a pat on the back, and I could go back to running my own life.
