Sober and sane
About six weeks after I joined AA, I suffered an attack of a grave mental disorder (to use Big Book terminology). I was taken to a crisis prevention center, where the psychiatrist determined that I was so manic that: she could give me no drug, with any amount of safety, to bring me down to earth. The only medicine she recommended was to be found in the rooms of AA.
