Three years sober, I was faced with surgery. I tried to practice the Third Step to the best of my ability. Having gone over the Steps every week with the same group, I had made some improvement but still had fear and anxiety about the trip to the hospital. Before sobriety, other trips to the hospital had involved my psychiatrist, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sleepless nights, and a return to the bottle as soon as I got home.
