I WAS NEWLY SOBER, and I was facing my first sober New Year's Eve. Ordinarily, it wouldn't have been so bad, but I was out of town, away from my regular AA group. To make things worse, the hotel we were staying at turned out to be far off in the boondocks, and icy roads made it impossible to travel at night.
