Moratorium on mandates

Regarding "Unfinished Business" in the March 1986 Grapevine, I must say, D. G., I am one who is sincere when I have occasion to read the Steps, and hope never to forget to say "Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery." To me, mandatory is one word that is entirely foreign to the AA program. I believe most of us were nearly mandated to death before we ever arrived. Active alcoholics have been told so many times what they can do, what they can't do, where to go, etc. I've been guilty of saying to a real live one, "You can't drink." Ha! He knows better. He knows this is one thing he can do, and often it's the only thing he can do (and do real well, I might add).
