Restricted Zone?

On a recent business trip to California, I attended a meeting near where I was staying, which was clearly marked (if you understood the "code" in the area directory) as a closed meeting for men only. Although most of the members of the group obviously knew each other well and there was a sense of being in the locker room of an exclusive country club, I was warmly welcomed--but, of course, although a stranger, I was male.
