Writing the 'Wretches'

Some of the nicest aspects of sobriety are the pleasant surprises, the unexpected rewards. Most of us stop drinking in a state of despair, no longer able to tolerate life with alcohol, but unable to imagine life without it. One thing seems certain at this stage--life without alcohol will not be fun. At best it will have to be endured. Then, sometime into sobriety, after doing what we should do for a while, some peace and contentment come our way. The hope begins to grow in us that sobriety may not be so bad after all, that life without alcohol can be enjoyable, even fun.
