Bleak no more

In many places the Big Book mentions the importance of being useful to our Higher Power and to our fellows. In the first years of sobriety it was easy to be useful. It started by emptying ashtrays and making coffee. Then I was asked to chair meetings. Later the group gave me the responsibility of being its secretary. Another group then asked me to fill in a term as GSR. Later I was elected to my own term. In time, the district chose me to be its district committee member, and I was able to be a trusted servant for two more years. Service opened a whole new dimension of AA usefulness. Time passed and the increased involvement with group and area gave me a feeling of security.
