Happily Ever After

Many times since crawling out of the swamp of remorse, blackouts, and illusion I have been "teased" by the misleading or wishful thought that things will be great when: a) I get a year of sobriety; b) I get a sponsor who really cares--the one I have now is too rough; c) I become a respected member of my group, possibly GSR or chairman or secretary; d) my wife finally "gets" her Al-Anon program and smartens up; and e) I make all my amends. Then we are going to have our vine-covered cottage, with a white picket fence and 2.3 children, and we will live "happily ever after." Only then will ministers be calling me for advice or to set up recovery programs. Money will not be a problem. Euphoria, that state of mind often sought after in a bottle, will finally be mine.
