Adrift in the Doldrums

A dozen years ago I wrote an article for the Grapevine criticizing the attitudes of some AA members with a too-comfortable sobriety. Among their other shortcomings, I noted, they didn't spend much time with newcomers because beginners made them uncomfortable; they would arrive at meetings late and leave early; they came to meetings mainly to socialize with their old friends; the central thrust of their sobriety was the pursuit of comfort and the avoidance of involvement. The title of this piece was "Apathetics Anonymous" and the Grapevine headlined it on the front cover!
