I cringed inwardly, knowing he meant me, personally, even though I was one among several thousand people at the twenty-fifth International AA Convention in Long Beach, California in July of 1960. I had been sober more than two years, a miraculous circumstance considering that I had remained ignorant of the true depth and scope of AA.
