Rubik's Recovery

It's almost universally accepted that "the" program of Alcoholics Anonymous is the most successful treatment for alcoholism in the history of man. I emphasize the "the" in the program for that's how we rightfully refer to it. However, when I take a broader view and look at it from a different perspective I see many, many AA programs. In a very realistic sense there is a program for each of us, because we each find our own personal program within the broad Twelve Steps. I've come to liken the program of Alcoholics Anonymous to the Rubik Cube which has 42.3 quintillion combinations (that's 18 zeroes), but only one correct combination or configuration. The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous must have at least as many combinations when all its facets, nuances, subtleties, variations, interpretations, shadings, and colorings are calculated. But the difference is that for any given alcoholic there are probably many successful combinations. It's simply a matter of twisting and turning the cube, i.e.: going to a variety of meetings, reading widely in the AA literature, talking with other alcoholics, prayer and meditation, Twelfth Step work, and so forth, ad infinitum. Eventually each person will find the right combination or combinations for him or her.
