He came to believe because he saw it work for others

I had a very hard time, when I came to AA, understanding and accepting the fact that alcoholism is a physical illness. That sounded like a cop-out to me. I could just hear myself saying to those who had been harmed by my drinking, "It's not my fault, folks. My sickness made me do all those bad things." Fortunately, a wise sponsor got that cobweb out of my head by taking me to a series of lectures by a doctor who explained the physical aspects of our illness in painstaking detail.
