Once when I was very young, I was telling a nonalcoholic friend how AA works. I told him about the physical allergy, chocolate bars, and helping other drunks. These were the things I then understood. My friend is a dedicated Quaker, a man of great spiritual clarity, and so it was not surprising when he asked, "But what is your spiritual goal?"
