On September 8, 1960, I came to my senses after a three-week binge. My wife realized that I probably needed hospitalization, and she called my doctor, who had hospitalized me in June of that year. He told her that no way would the hospital accept me as a patient. He referred to me as "a crazy man" and said that my stay at the hospital had caused the resignation of three staff members. For me hospitalization was out. Later that day, I was told that I had two other choices: a high-priced sanitarium, which I could not afford, and the county asylum, which was a snake pit. Still later that day, thinking I had no option left, I was privileged to meet my sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous.
