The article "A Hole in the Heart!" in the May 1987 issue was a timely one for me. Alter talking about the need to visit my mother and to share with her what I've learned about myself through this program, I seized the opportunity on Mother's Day by driving two hours to pick her up (I recently got my driver's license back), taking her to Mass, and then breakfast afterward. During our sharing I was able to make amends to her for my own self-centered behavior while growing up and for not being available to her because of my drinking. She expressed surprise at some of what I had to say but was generally accepting of me and told me that she loved me, no matter what had happened (or not happened) in the past.
