New York

In 1946, the center of local AA activity was the 41st Street Clubhouse on the west side of New York. As part of the clubhouse, an AA office was maintained to act as a service center for AA inquiries and hospital referrals. The overall operation, however, was in debt for several thousand dollars, and a reorganization committee was formed. Each group at that time in the greater New York area, twenty-three in all, was asked to have a representative attend a joint meeting to discuss overall problems at the clubhouse. As a result of this meeting, a special committee was selected from the group representatives assembled, with the initial purpose of securing funds to liquidate all clubhouse bills and then to arrange an intergroup office which was to be in no way connected to the clubhouse.
