THE TRADITIONS HADN'T BEEN ADOPTED IN THE 1940s, so the Grapevine contained a fascinating mixture of AA experience and non-AA items, which today would be set off on gray pages in the "About Alcoholism" section. But in the March 1946 issue, in a monthly column entitled "Clip Sheet," we ran across this excerpt from the New York Times, which told of a new kind of fringe benefit for being a drunk:
