LATE ONE NIGHT a well-oiled lush fell out of a bar and put two bits into a parking meter. It immediately registered 60 minutes. He stared at it for a while, experienced a flash of alcoholic clarity, and breathed a sigh of relief: "Phew! For a minute I thought I'd lost a hundred pounds!"
