My January 1988 Grapevine article ended: "Maybe the inspired message of Bill and Bob will penetrate the iron curtain; after all, in spite of adversity, you and I got sober, didn't we?" But I didn't truly believe this could ever be. When I gave out a "Twelve and Twelve" to a Russian, I cautiously suggested that Lenin could be substituted for God (and leave the rest up to him). This would keep us both out of trouble--in 1976.
