Stand and be counted

I start my story with "I was born a Jewish Alcoholic Princess." When I finally admitted I was an alcoholic and came into the program four years ago, I thought, "Oh God, why me?" All my life I wanted to be like everyone else and fit in and feel as if I belonged. Now I have this disease which doesn't even belong in the same sentence with Jewish, Judaism, Yiddish, bagels and lox. I grew up hearing that "Shikker" is a Goy--a drunk is a non-Jew. We Jews were immune to alcoholism and drug addiction, we were the "Chosen Ones." Yet today I am doubly blessed; I am a grateful, recovering, Jewish alcoholic.
