We Have Met the Enemy

Our comic pages contain more sense than they are usually given credit for. Pogo and his cohorts, for example, marched about wearing paper helmets and brandishing wooden swords, looking for the "enemy." If I remember the details correctly, Pogo's gang eventually came upon a large upright mirror and on seeing themselves in it, made the comment: "We have met the Enemy and he is us!"
