Enclosed is my check for renewal. I've been reading the Grapevine since May 1947--can't remember just when I started subscribing, probably several months later. But I can't remember the countless times it saved me. I never had a sponsor. There weren't very many choices then, but I would have died the death of a thousand cuts before I asked anyone! Looking back, I guess the Grapevine was my sponsor--it jolted me, steadied me, opened my eyes and then hit me between them, wrenched open my mind and comforted the hurt, nudged me along gently until I found myself at the door of the Higher Power and helped me turn the handle so I could walk through. Most of all, it encouraged me to stay sober, even when the flesh on my arms was crawling up and down like little serpents. The message I got every month was "Don't give up; put it off; don't drink today--no matter what." You can see why I think it's a great bargain!
