In 1971 after twenty-five years of drinking, I joined AA. Unknowingly, I heard what I needed to hear on a group level and a one-on-one level--alcoholics communicating with other alcoholics, sharing the knowledge that my case was not different, that we all had the same common problem: alcoholism. The identification was electrifying.
