As the Fog Fades Away

In a little over two weeks, I hope to receive a medallion for three years of sobriety in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Looking back at my three years is difficult. I remember, as a vague, distant fog, leaving a hospital where my body had recovered enough for me to enter a twenty-eight-day alcoholism treatment program. My liver was the size of a basketball--almost ruined. My weight was close to 280 pounds. I could hardly walk, hold a cup with one hand, sign my name legibly, concentrate on anything for more than a minute or two, or sleep. It is a miracle that I am sitting here, today, writing this. I am convinced that my Higher Power, God, working through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, made it possible.
