ON HIS FIRST RUN FOR CONGRESS, teetotaller William Jennings Bryan sought out voters in frontier saloons. In one, he found a tippling old Democrat who asked his advice on how to break the habit. Prescribed Bryan: "When you get all the liquor you want, call for sarsaparilla."
