Outside issues?

A few years back, during a planning meeting for the annual South East New York (SENY) Convention, the chairperson read a letter from a member who wanted SENY's permission to run a booth at the convention. At the booth, the member wanted to sell an assortment of bumper stickers, t-shirts, coffee mugs, coins, and the like. A very heated discussion followed. The committee was very much in favor of replying with a letter citing the Sixth Tradition and rejecting the request. Before that could be put to a motion, however, a member of the committee reminded us of the Fifth and Tenth Traditions. We were reminded that a group's primary purpose is to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Everything else is an outside issue. The committee then decided to form no opinion on this issue and no formal response was issued.
