I would like to reply to L. F.'s letter in the August Grapevine about the use of demeaning labels such as bum, dipso, sot, tippler, drunk, barfly, alky, etc., in the humor sections of the Grapevine. I for one think it would be dangerous for the Grapevine to join the politically correct camp and outlaw all word usage that would make any of us uncomfortable in any way. I am not a hard character and I object to abusive language in general, but if I pick up a drink I will be a drunk again. To me it will not be a simple relapse.
