When I came into the program years ago, most meetings were open meetings with three speakers and the talks were fairly structured: The alcoholic described how he picked up his first drink, how long and how alcoholically he drank, and what finally brought him to AA. I say "he" because in those days in New York City, the ratio of men to women was about six to one.
