I came to AA in 1951, seeking help for an alcoholism problem. When I came into the huge, dark, drafty auditorium I was very nervous, not at all sure how the people in that hall would receive me. Would they understand why I was there? Would they accept me and my need for understanding? Would they be willing to help? They did. They did. They would. And after this, my first meeting, and the long talk over coffee later, I was hooked. From that point onward, AA--its program, its people, its groups, and its organization--was important to my work and, more and more, to my life.
